Meta Releases Muse Spark Open: 816B Parameter Open-Weight Multimodal MoE Model

Meta Superintelligence Labs has launched Muse Spark Open, an 816-billion-parameter open-weight Mixture-of-Experts model featuring 42 billion active parameters and a 1-million-token context window. Optimized for agentic coding and native multimodal processing across text, audio, image, and video, the model introduces hardware optimizations for local and cloud infrastructure.

Open-Weight Sparse Architecture and Multimodal Reasoning

Meta Superintelligence Labs has released Muse Spark Open, a frontier open-weight foundation model designed for long-horizon software engineering and multi-step agentic workflows. Built on a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, the model contains 816 billion total parameters while activating 42 billion parameters per inference pass. The sparse parameter layout enables high capacity without requiring full-parameter dense compute per token.

Unlike text-focused models, Muse Spark Open incorporates native multimodal perception across text, visual documents, static images, spatial video streams, and audio feeds. Supporting a native 1-million-token context window, the model can ingest complete software repositories, multi-file architectural dependencies, and extended video telemetry within a single context pass. Meta's engineering teams trained the system on NVIDIA GB300 NVL72 Blackwell Ultra infrastructure, incorporating advanced reinforcement learning to optimize first-attempt accuracy in multi-turn tool calling and automated code synthesis.

Hardware Quantization, Local Execution, and Infrastructure Integration

To address the hardware footprint required to serve an 816-billion-parameter model, Meta and partner platforms released optimized weight checkpoints across multiple quantization formats:

  • NVFP4 Quantization: Optimized specifically for modern Tensor Core architectures, compressed NVFP4 checkpoints shrink the memory footprint across all 816 billion parameters. This reduces memory bandwidth requirements per token while freeing VRAM capacity for concurrent long-context KV caches.
  • Local Dual-Mac Deployment: Leveraging Apple's MLX framework and unified memory architectures, two Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studio workstations linked together can hold and execute the complete model locally, providing developers with self-hosted frontier performance on desktop hardware.
  • Ecosystem Runtime Support: The model supports native deployment across major open-source inference engines, including vLLM, SGLang, TensorRT-LLM, Apple MLX, and Hugging Face Transformers.

Open Licensing and Enterprise Strategic Positioning

Muse Spark Open is distributed under the Muse Model License via Hugging Face and enterprise cloud providers including Amazon SageMaker JumpStart and OpenRouter. The licensing framework allows free developer use, local custom fine-tuning, and model distillation, while placing commercial monetization at scale under structured enterprise tier guidelines.

By releasing an 816B parameter multimodal MoE model into the open-source ecosystem, Meta continues its strategy of establishing open-weight standards for agentic coding and multimodal research. The release provides engineering teams with inspectable, self-hostable reasoning infrastructure capable of handling end-to-end repository migrations, multimodal debugging, and autonomous workflow automation.
