OpenAI Models Are Coming to Google Cloud: What Is Confirmed and What Is Not

OpenAI's frontier models and Codex workflows are heading to Google Cloud's Model Garden, bought through Marketplace. It is a private preview for now, with general availability promised in the coming weeks.

OpenAI and Google Cloud have announced a partnership that would have looked unlikely a year ago: OpenAI's frontier models and its Codex agentic coding workflows are coming to Google Cloud's Model Garden. The announcement was made on 21 October 2026, and OpenAI says general availability is planned "in the coming weeks."

What was announced

Google Cloud customers will be able to buy OpenAI models through Model Garden, with billing handled through Google Cloud Marketplace. According to developer coverage, that means usage appears on the normal Google Cloud invoice and can draw down an enterprise's existing cloud spending commitment.

The models are expected to run on dedicated Google Cloud infrastructure behind isolated gateways, with Google's access controls and data governance applied. Zero Data Retention options are described as coming soon, and Confidential Compute is planned. OpenAI also says its models will soon appear in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, and Google says it plans to bring them to Gemini for business.

Which models

OpenAI's own post speaks generally of "frontier models." Developer outlets report that three models are involved: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. Those names come from secondary reporting rather than from the OpenAI post itself, so check the official Model Garden listing before building around a specific model.

What is still unclear

  • Availability: It is currently a private preview for selected enterprises, and no general availability date has been set beyond "the coming weeks."
  • Pricing: The announcement coverage reviewed for this article does not give Model Garden prices, so how they compare with buying directly from OpenAI is not yet known.
  • Regions: The coverage reviewed does not say where the models will be served from, which matters for data residency and for customers outside the US and Europe.

Why it matters

Google says this makes Google Cloud the only major hyperscaler offering all three leading closed-source model families alongside its own and open models, a claim worth treating as Google's framing. For enterprises, the draw is choice without separate vendor contracts. For OpenAI, it widens distribution beyond Microsoft, though the company is clear that Microsoft remains its primary cloud partner.

For developers in markets like Cameroon, Nigeria or Kenya, the practical effect is indirect for now: it is an enterprise offering through a cloud marketplace. But it signals how quickly the walls between AI labs and cloud providers are coming down, and that is likely to shape pricing and access over the next year.
